Fall 2007 Weekly Recaps

Week 1:

Oh Yes It's Monday Night
It's Monday night, and the feeling's (pretty much) right as The Ship set sail on it's maiden Monday voyage. Mmmm, oh yeah, it was also Ladies Night at Flannery's, and despite some early hesitation, The Ship showed it is more than capable of competing in Division B.

Blocking out any nervous jitters, Rich led off the first game with a win, including a Ton-40 and a Ton.  But The Ship quickly learned that "B" would not be so easy, as we dropped the next four games.  But Mindy clawed her way back to a win in game two of her round, and John pulled out a split, giving The Ship a respectable 3-5 score after S501.

Dave / Michael brought their "A" game to "B" with two wins in three outstanding Cricket matches, and then / Andrew bulled their way to a win in one of three, and the score was 8-6 after Cricket.

The Ship managed to pull out one additional point in D501, when Michael / Mindy grabbed a win in their second game.  So, with a final score of 11-7, The Ship announced its arrival on the scene.  This is your night, baby!

Props:
Mindy -  Oh what a night for the 2-time Ladies All Star champion.
Michael's Murse - So chic so fine you all looks so divine.

Week 2:

But Whenever Monday Comes
If we are going to compete in B, we need every advantage we can get.  This week, at least one of us was bulked up on some BALCO supplements, but there is no asterisk attached to these results.

Rich started off the night against the dreaded "Ron," and proceeded to get swept with nary a chance at double-out.  But the tables were turned in the next game, as Michael swept two games, while posting 300 AS points in the process.  Darian kept the pattern going, by getting swept in the next two games, and John nearly evened things up in the final round, but couldn't close out the second game of his match.  So, The Ship ended S501 down 5-3, and looking for a little extra juice.

The dark nemesis "Ron" struck again in the opening round of Cricket, leading a sweep of Michael / Mindy in all three games.  Rich / John played three very tight games, including a bull's-eye shoot-out, but were only able to take one game in their round.  With only one win in Cricket, The Ship really needed a shot in the arm to rebound from a 10-4 deficit.

Michael / Rich were pumped up for D501 and put together two very strong games to take down the vaunted "Ron" twice.  John / Mindy had two tight games to end the night, but The Ship was only able to end up with a 6-12 loss.

Props:
Michael - For clearly creaming the competition, including 791 AS points (the current B record).

Week 3:

Tell Me Why
Sometimes teams get very excited over darts.  I don't understand it, if they think they are as good as gold.  I can see no reasons, 'cause there are no reasons to put on a show.  So it is, as on into boomtown we go.

Perhaps it was all of the vodka and caffeine, but things started out pretty intense.  Michael looked to set the tone early with a win, and ended with a split.  Rich followed with his first two losses of the night.  Dave and Andrew followed up with splits and The Ship was down 3-5 after S501.

The best part of Cricket was clearly hanging out in the back garden.  Michael / Mindy were swept in the first round, and John / Rich did the same in the second round.  Needless to say, there was great rejoicing during this round, just not on The Ship.

Michael / Mindy were able to bounce back in D501 and earn a split in the first round.  Andrew / John closed out the night with another split, making the final score a 5-13 loss for The Ship.  Let's just shoot this week down, and come back and switch to overload next week.

Props:
Andrew - Two wins and 293 AS points.

Week 4:

It's Just Another...
It was just another manic week for The Ship and its crew.  Dave was out mingling with athletes, and Mindy was back from her trip to Peru, and The Ship was camped out at Biddy's for the evening.  Time it goes so fast, when you're having fun.  And all of the other craziness was just prologue to the fun we were about to have this week.

The first round set the tone for the back-and-forth that was to come the rest of the night.  Andrew led things off, and won the first two games, followed by Mindy dropping the next two games.  Rich won the next two, and then Darian (coming off the bench while Dave was accepting the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award) dropped the final two.  So with alternating win / loss sweeps, the score was 4-4 after S501.

Rich / Darian led off Cricket with a win, before dropping the next two in very close games.  Andrew / Mindy dropped the next three, and suddenly The Ship was down 5-9 after Cricket.  But the real fun was just about the begin.

With his GoGirlGo grant tucked in his pocket, Dave joined Mindy in the first round of D501, but they were swept in two games.  But what followed was definitely one of the craziest things we've ever seen in our dart journeys.  In the first game of their D501 round, Rich / Andrew were stuck in a tight game, when the other team facing a 32-out.  With their first dart, they missed.  Dart number two hit the double-8.  Thinking they had won, their player turned around to shake hands and thank us for a good game.  After we told him he still had 16 left on the board, he promptly turned around and, with his third dart, nailed a double-8 for an impossible win.  In game two, The Ship jumped out to a big lead, and eased its way down to a 32-out.  Turner stepped to the line, and with his first dart, he missed.  Dart number two hit double-8.  Sensing an improbable repeat, Turner turned around and shook hands, and thanked the other team for a good game.  He them promptly turned around and, with his third dart, nailed a double-8 for a highly unlikely repeat performance win.  So, despite the 12-6 loss for The Ship, it was a night to remember, and another manic Monday night.

Props:
Andrew - Back to back props for the back-to-back extravaganza.

Week 5:

They Call It Stormy...
Another week, and another stormy Monday for The Ship.  It was an outing that left us banging our heads against the wall, somewhat frustrated by tough losses.  But, we'll keep on trying each week, and if nothing else works, let's go to church on Sunday, to kneel down and pray.

Michael brought the thunder to start the night, with a hailstorm of AS points raining down, resulting in two wins.  Rich and John hit about 5 on the Beaufort scale, bringing enough force to each earn a split.  But in the final match-up, Darian brought a [tropo]pause to The Ship's winnings, dropping two very close games.  With the score 4-4 things seemed to be well, but dark clouds were on the horizon.

Michael / Darian had a whirlwind round to start Cricket, dropping the first and third games but winning the middle match.  Rich / John got swept up in a derecho in round two, and despite some decent throws they were blown away in all three games.  Down 9-5, The Ship was suddenly caught in a tropical depression.

John / Darian ended the dry season  with a win in the second game of D501, but it was the last point The Ship would earn all night.  The final game was played in near blizzard conditions, as Rich / Michael faced a complete whiteout.  So The Ship is left to dig out from under the 12 points that were dumped upon it, and bundle up for next week.

Props:
Michael - Three wins amongst the tempest.

Week 6:

Come Monday It'll Be Alright
OK, before we start I just want to let you know that those sandwiches over there, yeah those sandwiches on that table over there, umm... they are not for you.  I just wanted to clarify that before we go any further.  Now that that's out of the way, let's get our hush-puppies on and get down to the recap.

The Ship and its legion was pressed into the back room like a panini sandwich.  Rich hammed it up in the first game with two wins, including two Ton-21's.  "Croque" Monsieur Turner served up an open-faced special with a split in his two games.  But po'  boys John and Dave came up with two(na) melts in their games, and The Ship was down 5-3 after the first round.

Once again, the sandwiches are not for you.

The Ship has been nothing but sloppy joes this season in Cricket, averaging about one win per week, and this week was no different.  Rich / Andrew muffed a lotta points in the first two games of their round before finally pulling out a win in game three.  And during Dave / John's round the only one who was happy was the waitress, as we filled our faces with food but couldn't fill the "win" column.  So, once again we posted only a single Cricket win, and found ourselves down 10-4.

Just a reminder, keep your damn hands off the sandwiches.

Luckily Greg Jennings made John a winner for the night, because there were no heroes to be found in D501 either, as The Ship was completely submarined.  With two losses by Rich / Dave and two losses by Andrew / John, the night ended with The Ship being completely clubbed by a final score of 14-4.

Props:
Rich - Triple-decker with three wins.

Week 7:

BYE Week
Not a "bi week," as mentioned in the ESPN Sports Guy column this week.

Week 8:

A Monday Night Party
Are you ready for some darts?  Come on down to the big stage, where you can compete for cash and superstar prizes!  This week, with the darts Commish in the house, The Ship played the bully and won the showcase showdown by posting its first B league victory.

Michael came on down and started things off, throwing As points all over the place, but inexplicably dropping the first two games.  Rich made his move next, though, and got the two wins back.  It was in the bag for Andrew, who won his two games, as well.  The deck seemed stacked for Darian, and she was able to cash in with one win, and The Ship held a 5-3 lead after S501.

This week, we attempted to pull a switcheroo, and reverse the trend of only one win in Cricket each week.  Rich / Andrew stepped up and battled to win one out of three.  And Darian / Michael played a grand game, coming up with two wins in their three games.  With the split in Cricket, The Ship held an 8-3 lead heading into D501.

Darian / Michael let 'em roll in the first round and won both games as eazy az 1 2 3.  Andrew / Rich were looking to finish with a flourish and take two to end the night.  With a win in the first game, it looked like the golden road was paved, but after jumping out to a big lead in game two, they got slapped with the plinko stick and dropped the final game.  But the spin on the big wheel came up a winner, and The Ship walked away with a super, smashing, great 11-7 win, and a lovely dinette set.

Props:
Darian - Ruling the night like The Gooch ruled the schoolyard.

Week 9:

And the Truth is Just Beginning
Here's Monday, and here comes The Ship.  Slowly but surely, it looks like we are emerging from our hive and taking control if this "B" thing.  We came this far without once hurting others, but now we've changed our minds and we are stinging like a bee.

This week started out as sweet as honey, with Rich nearly winning two to open up, but coming up 'this close' with one dart, which came back to sting him in the ass.  But Michael swept his two games, and Andrew and Mindy both split, to give The Ship an early 5-3 lead.

Our season-long case of Cricket Collapse Disorder continued inexplicably this week.  Michael / John played three strong games but only emerged with one point.  Rich / Mindy made a stellar comeback from an R6 / R7 start in their first game, but 'fell just' short on bulls and ultimately walked away with only a single point, as well.  And just like that, we bumbled our way into a tie.  But the truth was just beginning...

The team of Michael / Mindy played like a pairing of Sealfon / Patel in the Scripps-Howard, and racked up two wins in the opener.  The two wins secured a tie for the night, but Rich / Andrew tacked one more on the board with a split, to give The Ship back-to-back weekly wins and our second outright win of the season.  Given our effort against this team in Week 2, it is clear we now belong in this colony.

Props:
Michael - Five wins and a performance that would make Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov stand and applaud.
Mindy - Bullseyes and bowling belie a bee in her bonnet.

Week 10:

Home on a Monday...
Can you guess where I'm writing from?  Well, it's not the Las Vegas Hilton, unfortunately, and I'm not spinning The Wheel.  This week was over the top, as we were playing to win and looking to make lonesome losers of the top ranked team.  So quiet down, drop the bullhorn and use your "inside voice" as you read along with this week's update.

Things didn't get off to a screaming start for The Ship, when Michael dropped two despite putting up a lot of AS points, followed by a loss form Rich.  But Rich hacked his way to a win in his second game, and Andrew followed by slashing his way to a split.  John's game got stuck in the garage door, and he dropped the final two games, putting The Ship in great peril.

In the second installment of the night, Rich / Andrew led off and were subjected to the darts version of being dragging into a van in broad daylight and stabbed to death.  They let game one slip away, lost game two on a C3 from nowhere, and then dumped the last game.  Michael / Darian avoided a tight squeeze by winning game two, but The Ship was handed a significant amount of carnage and was now down 11-3.

All bets were off in the evening's dénouement.  Michael / John were a little weary in game one, but they jumped out of the bushes for a winning attack in game two.  And just like that, whatever you thought you knew about this match, forget it.  All of the previous night's antics came back to bite our opponents in the ass.  Rich / Andrew jumped out to a huge lead in their first game and ultimately posted a win, and then played a tight second game which Andrew ultimately put to bed.  So, The Ship suffered a 12-6 loss, but we know we'll return next week for one last scare.

Props:
Andrew - If you want to stop him, you gotta cryogenically freeze his head, decapitate him, or blow him up.

Week 11:

48 Hours Til Monday
ROXANNE!  In a special twist this week, each round of the match was played at a different bar.  So hop in your POS sky blue Cadillac and come along for another ride with The Ship.

We started out at The Ship, where Michael escapes with two wins to start things off.  Rich, who has looked better, managed one win in his round.  Andrew needed some help from Billy Bear, as he dropped two games, but John picked up a win in the final match and The Ship salvaged a 4-4 tie early on.

We then moved the match over Torchy's for Cricket, and let's get something straight, The Ship doesn't like Cricket.  Michael / John pulled off one win on three games, and Rich / Andrew got one win, as well.  Form now on, whenever we play Cricket, we might have to play dirty.

For D501, things headed over to Vroman's, and the boys were back in town.  Michael / John picked up one win to start things off.  If other teams would start running respectable games, then Rich / Andrew wouldn't have to come in and hassle them every Monday night. But until then, we posted two wins in the final game and made the final score a 9-9 tie. You know what I mean?

Props:
Andrew - There's a new sheriff in town, and his name is Andrew Turner.

Week 12:

Well It Sure Is Monday Isn’t It Now
Well, color The Ship happy, because this week we played at Bailey's, and there's a sofa for two there, along with a bowling game and bar video games.  Of course, some dart dreams come true, and some don't.  This week ours didn't, but at least, in case I forget to tell you later, The Ship had a really good time on Monday night.

The night started out with Michael, whose special gift is impossible dart matchups, splitting two games while posting over 400 AS points.  Andrew split his two games as well.  Mindy and John were both looking for the fairy tale, but they each dropped two, and The Ship was looking a little vegged out down 6-2.

Michael / Mindy started off Cricket and were better better than Pirates of Penzance.  They dropped the first game, but came roaring back from way behind in game two, and then toughed it out in game three for two wins.  Rich / Darian then played three games that were not profane, but were really offensive, and The Ship was down 10-4.

Michael / John showed they have a lot of special gifts when they put up a win to start D501.  And finally, while very few teams surprise Rich / Andrew, this one shocked the hell outta them. Two losses in the finale made the final score a 13-5 Ship loss.  Done! Thank you. Now we can relax.

Props
Michael - Corners like he's on rails.
